A former
Assistant Secretary General (ASG) of the UN named as a suspect in the
recent Iraqi oil scandal is lobbing for illegality in
Cyprus.
Benon
Sevan, hurriedly retired following the scandal relating to the Food for Oil
Program for
Iraq,
recently procured a meeting between the AGBU’s CB board member Berg
Setrakian and President Tassos Papadopoulos of
Cyprus
in New York. They asked the President to rescind the Listing of the
Melkonian Establishment and its grounds, recently bestowed by his
government.
Confirmation of the closure of the school and a swift sale of the property?
That would
be illegal, for The AGBU is not, and never been, the owner of the MEI and
its estate (see the Melkonian Will, dated 1925), a fact clearly understood
by the government of
Cyprus. Setrakian’s friend Benon Sevan (who along with Berg and the rest of the CB are signatories of the AGBU CB’s statement of 16 March 2004, which tries to justify the closure of MEI) is in Cyprus – with a US legal adviser.
Does
anybody think that they are there to rectify their mistake and make their
excuses to the Government of Cyprus, saying “We thought that the AGBU was
the owner of the MEI. We made an error. The AGBU is just a trustee.
Therefore we have to keep the MEI open on its estate in
Nicosia,
as a Western Armenian Boarding Secondary School for the children of
All-Armenian worldwide Commonwealth”. It is much more likely that Benon Sevan, together with his US legal adviser, is in Cyprus to continue his lobbying and presentation of false and inaccurate arguments that he began in New York. We warn all Cypriot and international authorities concerned, that a former ASG of the UN is in Cyprus to carry out lobbying for an illegal action. Pro Edvcatio’s request for amendments – addressed to the Minister of interior of Cyprus, copied for the President Tassos Papadopoulos as well as all authorities concerned – is herewith attached for the information of the public. savemelkonian
