The decision by the Central Board of the AGBU to close down the Melkonian Educational Institute creates deep concern to us, as it endangers Armenian education and our efforts for the preservation of our national identity both within our community and in the broader region. The Melkonian, with its 80-year presence, has become an educational and cultural centre for the Armenian community and Cyprus in general. Any attempt to close it down will be a big blow for our community and the Armenian people. We hope that this decision is reconsidered, and the Melkonian becomes a unique educational establishment in the Middle East and the European Union, which will bring together the new generation of our community and neighbouring countries, implanting within them the ideals and spirit for survival and preservation of their national identity. However, it is imperative that mistakes of the past are avoided and the Melkonian becomes a true pan-Armenian educational fortress, which would only bring feelings of pride to the Armenian nation. We join our voices with the worldwide Melkonian graduates and hope that this struggle is crowned with success.
